Our story

It started because there was nothing else.

Senior Jazz Connection began in January 2022, when Brenda Tate went looking for something for seniors to do in Pittsburgh and found almost nothing. Forty years with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, a Hill District upbringing, and a lifelong love of jazz gave her a simple idea: bring the music to where seniors already live.

What started as a few lunches in high rises around the city now fills convention halls. Jazz has deep roots in the Hill District, where Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and Stanley Turrentine all played. We are keeping that sound in the neighborhood, and in the room with the people who grew up on it.
